Streaming isn’t even a good business model, it’s anathema to profit. You can only have so much subscriber growth. So if all of these media conglomerates are still jumping into it headfirst, there’s another reason. They want to essentially moot the end of the Paramount decree. They want absolute control over all aspects of distribution. They want to be the only ones that benefit from the making of a movie. That’s worth more than “line go up indefinitely.”

Also, thank God I picked up a copy of 28 Days Later on DVD for $1 at my building’s stoop sale yesterday. I did that before I read this.

yeah, I should have mentioned that Sony recently bought Alamo Drafthouse -- they really are going back to the old model of total control over distribution. And that move explains why Alamo had been so ferociously fighting unionization efforts and closing down theaters. (I mean, that's just normal corporate stuff, but the news out of Alamo the last six months had been pretty alarming.)

its disappearance from streaming is a conspiracy to make us all forget that Edgar Ramírez could, at one point, act. so we'll be satisfied with him running around in cultural garbage with Mandy Moore and not demand more.
