There’s something to be said for how a lot of the career/life/personal ambitions that seemed feasible 30 years ago have now been rendered meaningless. We’re all super ill-equipped to deal with life’s futility and if something - anything at all - convinces you that you will have a concrete object AND live in people’s heads, be super sexy and enviable and also really smart, well… of course everyone wants in on it. I do wonder if writing is easier to jump in on (re: pump for suckers) because most people can (allegedly) read but no one wants to engage with art created post-1945.
There’s also a romantic hope that your Genius (TM) will make up for being either pathetic or a menace to society. How many people call themselves “artsy” as a cover for poor emotional control and time management?
